Boutiq turns 5

Starting a business during the pandemic and seeing it thrive is no small feat. We talked to Karen Buckalew APRN-C, MSCP, about her career and having Boutiq Medical Clinic in Ivanhoe Village hit the five-year milestone.

Looking back, how do you feel you've grown personally and professionally over the past 5 years?

These past five years have been a journey of continuing to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge treatments, advances in science-backed knowledge and skills, refining my business and also embracing my purpose. I've grown into a practitioner who values outcomes just as much as the human connection behind them. It's about blending knowledge and science with compassion i helping my patients look and feel like their best selves.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in your early days, and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge was initially opening when a pandemic began, then earning trust as a new small business where patients are placing both their health and their confidence in your hands. I overcame that by leading with experience, honesty, authenticity, education, and results. My goal is to ensure that my patients feel seen, heard, and supported.

Is there a moment in your career that stands out as especially meaningful or memorable?

Receiving a letter from a parent thanking me for recognizing symptoms in his 21-year-old daughter, which led to diagnosing her lymphoma early … she has fully recovered. Receiving a “thank you for bugging me to go to the cardiologist … I had emergency quadruple bypass surgery and now I'm going to be okay.”

That is the reason I have continued to integrate medical and aesthetic knowledge, interventions and treatments together. Healthy body inside, healthy body outside. Restoring confidence and vitality is not just about appearance.

How do you stay passionate and inspired in your work?

My patients are my inspiration. Every story of renewed confidence, every transformation, reminds me that this work goes way beyond aesthetics. It's all about helping my patients reclaim their energy, their radiance and their joy. With my Hormone Therapy program, which is launching soon, women will have a better understanding of the changes and symptoms of peri/menopause and have access to science-backed and approved treatments.

How has the skincare or beauty industry changed since you started, and in the last five years?

I've never been a filler pusher. My philosophy has always focused on natural enhancements while embracing each person's own uniqueness. Interestingly, there has now been a remarkable shift toward treatments that honor authenticity. People don't want to look frozen and full. They want to look rested, refreshed, and in harmony with who they are and how they feel. This evolution toward natural, restorative results is something I deeply believe in and am proud to offer.

At the heart of my work is a core belief: everyone deserves to feel healthy, comfortable and confident in their own skin. Whether it's through health & wellness, advanced aesthetics, hormone support or restorative care, my goal is to meet patients where they are and help them feel like the very best version of themselves. Authentic, vibrant and empowered.
